Heartbroken to learn of the loss of Hannah Colton of KUNM News. Hannah was an incredible person dedicated to independent, thoughtful reporting. The Rio Grande Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is so, so sorry to hear that Hannah Colton has left us. Our thoughts are with her co-workers at KUNM News and all of the many, many friends she made across New Mexico and the wider world through her reporting.

What I admired most about her, from afar, was her insistence that paying attention to others could be its own rebuke to the horrific system we live under. In a year of so much loss, Hannah’s death is another reminder that the status quo is cruel and untenable. We have no choice but to fight to make the world a more compassionate, joyful, and attentive place. RIP. – katie jane fernelius

Hannah Colton, you are such a visionary newsroom leader, a fierce champion of justice, and one of the kindest people I ever met. I am struggling to imagine a world without your voice and impact. Hannah’s commitment to community cannot be overstated. She radiated it. We met in Alaska; danced too much at the Alaska Press Club. But the day after the 2016 election, I was lucky to spend the whole day with her in Chicago. We got free admission to the planetarium. The light found her. – Emily Kwong

A short memory of the late Hannah Colton whom is dearly missed: This is a photo I took of Hannah on July 2, 2019 in Downtown Albuquerque. We were covering a protest on the immigrant camps at the border. I turned around to look at the crowd and saw Hannah doing what she always did—humanely capturing people’s stories. She was a true gem to her community both as a journalist and overall human being. This is a tremendous loss in the world of journalism. My heart is with everyone who knew and loved her deeply, am so so sorry. She was just a general badass and lover of truth and justice. – Diana Cervantes
